The Customary System of Measurement, also called the American System, is used more commonly in the US than the Metric System. However, in science classes, the International System of Units (Metric System) is used. Here are several charts to help you familiarise yourself with the American System as you prepare to go abroad:
| American | Metric |
| 1 inch (in) | 2.54 cm |
|
1 foot (ft) = 12 in |
0.305 m |
| 1 yard (yd) = 3 ft | 0.914 m |
| 1 mile (mi) = 1,760yd | 1.609 km |
For those who want an exact conversion, the scientific formula for conversion is F= C(9/5) + 32.
However, for general approximations, a good rule of thumb for converting Celsius to Fahrenheit in your head is to double the temperature in Celsius and then add 30 (or subtract 30 from the temperature in Fahrenheit and then divide the difference by 2).
Example: (15 Celsius X 2) + 30 = 60 Fahrenheit.
| Fahrenheit | Celsius |
| 0 | -15 |
| 10 | -10 |
| 20 | -5 |
| 30 | 0 |
| 40 | 5 |
| 50 | 10 |
| 60 | 15 |
| 70 | 20 |
| 80 | 25 |
| 90 | 30 |
| 100 | 35 |
