Fulbright-University of York Scholar Award in History of Art
Each year, one award is offered to a US citizen in support of research and/or teaching/lecturing in any subject, in any of (or a combination of) University of York's history of art department. The appointment will be for a period of 3-8 months. Candidates will be selected by the Fulbright Commission and the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) to receive a grant to be used towards related travel and maintenance costs.
Award Benefits
The award is a monthly stipend of £2,500 for 3-8 month grant periods (projects may be up to 8 months long; a maximum grant amount being £20,000) paid in installments directly to the grantee, the first of which is typically given upon arrival in the UK. Grants are intended for general expenses incurred during the recipient's time in the UK, including any required work permit fees. Limited sickness and accident benefit coverage (typically not needed with free access to the NHS) as well as participation in a number of Fulbright Scholar events including the Fulbright Forum in January are also included. Candidates usually arrange to receive sabbatical pay while away to meet any additional expenses.
Selection Criteria
Minimum eligibility for this award category:
- US citizen (resident anywhere but the UK)
- Hold or expect to receive a PhD in a relevant area before arrival in the UK
- Rigor in scholarly enquiry and academic or professional excellence
- Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK
- Interest in the peoples and cultures of the UK
- Clear set of objectives for the Fulbright period
- Commitment to the host community through volunteer and extracurricular activity
The program seeks the widest possible variety of fields and career goals among applicants, including the arts and professional studies in addition to traditional academic disciplines. Preference will be given to those who do not have extensive experience in the UK.
In making these awards the Commission is looking not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to work for the betterment of the home and host countries both during and after studies.
Applying
Applicants must draw up a detailed project outline and provide evidence that the University of York will agree to act as host and supervisor. Applicants should identify and make contact with whom they wish to work. Whether lecturing, consulting on course design/curriculum or researching, the specifics of this arrangement should be worked out directly with the University of York. The grant year is from September until August, but fellows must begin the grant between 1 September and 30 April. Fellows will be expected to develop a long-term link between their home institution and University of York.
Applications are made online through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES). You will be able to log in and out of your application account and will not be required to complete the application in one sitting.
The online application facilitated by CIES is used by Fulbright Commissions worldwide and each Commission sets its own policies and procedures with country-specific information for making an application for a Fulbright Award in their country. Successful applicants will be invited for telephone interviews with Fulbright Commission senior staff on the date(s) listed below. Interviews will be held on the indicated date(s) only and may not be rescheduled.
Proposals must receive endorsement from the University of York, which the Fulbright Commission will seek on behalf of successful applicants.
