The University’s Honorary Fellows and Doctors include some of the most influential figures in the creative world, such as Giorgio Armani (fashion designer), Jonathan Ive (designer of the Apple iMac, iPod and iPhone), Celia Birtwell (textile designer), Ken Loach (director) and Mario Testino (fashion photographer). Honourees provide inspiration for students and staff not only by their achievements but also by taking up mentoring and teaching opportunities.
London is the largest city in the European Union and one of the world’s leading centres for business, finance and culture and a major tourist destination for both domestic and overseas visitors. It has a population of over 7.5 million and over 300 languages are spoken in the city.
There are over 240 museums throughout the city including the British Museum, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Design Museum.
Although it is the largest urban area in the UK, London is well endowed with open spaces. These include 5 Royal Parks and a number of small garden squares in Central London. There are a further 3 Royal Parks in the Greater London area and numerous other parks and open spaces such as Battersea Park, Alexandra Park, Hampstead Heath, Clapham Common, Hampton Court Palace and Kew Gardens to name a few. With 5 major airports and the Channel Tunnel, London is a major international transport hub.
English weather is unpredictable. December to February are the coldest months when it can snow and the temperature can drop to -3°C. The warmest months are between June and August with the average temperatures between 20° - 25°C.
