FULBRIGHT AWARDS

University of Sussex

LogoThe University of Sussex was founded in 1961.  Located in parkland close to the south-coast city of Brighton and Hove, the campus combines award-winning modern architecture and green open spaces.  It is within easy reach of London (1 hour), as well as mainland Europe and the rest of the world via Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

Sussex has a strong international focus with links with a number of institutions across the world.  Academic staff come from fifty nations, act as advisors, consultants and commentators and are regularly sought by the media for their opinions on relevant, real world issues.  Three Nobel Prize winners have come from the sciences at Sussex.

LogoSussex currently has around 11,500 students, comprising approximately 8,225 undergraduates and 3,225 postgraduates.  About a quarter of its students come from outside the UK from more than 120 countries.

Sussex enjoys high rankings for the quality of its teaching and research.

In 2008, The Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings placed Sussex 130th globally, and within the UK's top 20. In a survey spanning over 90 universities by i-Graduate (Autumn 2008), our international students voted Sussex the ‘Best Place to Be’ in England, a tribute to the quality of our student experience; our students highly rated our research quality, expert lecturers and safe, multicultural environment.

Sussex emphasises interdisciplinary teaching and research and has particular strengths in the Humanities (American Studies, English Literature, History), Social Sciences & Cultural Studies (Business and Management Studies, Development Studies, Education, International Relations, Law, Media Studies), Life Sciences (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Psychology), Science & Technology (Computing Sciences, Engineering & Information Technology, Science & Technology Policy).  A large number of our undergraduates spend a year of their degree overseas.

We offer a full orientation programme, as well as trips and social events.
The International & Study Abroad Office and the Students' Union Advice Centre can assist students on a range of matters. There is a health centre and dentist, childcare facilities and disability support. Students are guaranteed University-managed accommodation for their first year of study.

LogoThe Students' Union has over 100 societies, a radio station and student publications.  There are two multi-purpose sports centres with well-equipped fitness rooms, squash courts, football and rugby pitches, tennis courts, dance studio, and a floodlit Astroturf pitch.

Catering facilities include cafes, take-aways, coffee shop, self-service restaurants and bars, as well as grocery stores, newsagent, bookshop, post office, pharmacy and two banks.

Life in Brighton

LogoOur green campus is just an hour from Central London. The beautiful parkland location is a safe and convenient place to study, yet has fast, frequent rail links to London and the UK’s largest airports -- Heathrow and Gatwick.

We’re just minutes from the centre of Brighton, a very special place and one of the most lively and cosmopolitan cities in England. The city has a superb beach, marina and seafront artists quarter, and England's largest arts festival each May.

Students can choose to live on campus or in Brighton. The student community on campus is like a large village -- small enough to be friendly and welcoming, yet large enough to offer a lively social scene. The Students' Union is the focus of student life on campus, with over 100 clubs and societies, a radio station and student newspaper.
