With more than 6,000 students and 800 staff, we are active in every continent, and our scholars are leading world figures in their fields. Founded in 1902 as a teacher training college, the IOE is now a postgraduate college of the University of London. We offer the UK’s widest range of masters and doctoral degrees in education. We have the finest education library in Europe, with free access to the neighbouring University of London library and the British Library.
We are located in the intellectual and cultural heart of London, in a district called Bloomsbury. The British Museum, London’s most visited tourist attraction, is very close by, as is the British Library. The theatres, restaurants, shops and galleries of London’s West End are within walking distance.
Our hall of residence has recently been refurbished and offers homely and welcoming accommodation to over 200 students in a prime, central London location.
Transport links to the IOE are excellent. Russell Square, Kings Cross and Euston stations are all close by, providing access to the London Underground and national rail network. Trains to Europe depart from St Pancras station, a 15-minute walk from the IOE.
Institute students benefit from the IOE’s own students’ union facilities, and from the University of London Union centre which is close by.
Notable alumni of the IOE include: Cardinal Francis Arinze, principal adviser to Pope John Paul II; Louis de Bernières, novelist and author of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin; Lord Paul Myners, former UK government minister; Grace Naledi Pandor, Education Minister for South Africa; Professor Geoff Whitty, Director of the Institute of Education.
