Each year between 8 and 14 awards are offered to US citizens for the first year of Masters or PhD study in any discipline at any accredited UK university (please note that there are separate awards for scholars specializing in Journalism or wishing to study at one of the Fulbright partnership universities). Candidates will be selected by the US-UK Fulbright Commission and the Institute of International Education (IIE) to receive grants to be used towards tuition fees and maintenance costs in their first year of postgraduate study in the UK.
Grants are for up to £20,000 (pounds sterling), paid in installments directly to the grantee, the first of which is typically given upon arrival in the UK. This funding is intended as a contribution towards the first year of tuition fees and general maintenance costs whilst in the UK. Limited sickness and accident benefit coverage (typically not needed with free access to the NHS)is also provided.
All grantees in the UK attend a 3-day orientation program on arrival in September, a 5-day Fulbright Forum in January and a 3-day farewell, the Fulbright 'End-cap' weekend. The Commission has arranged a number of memberships for grantees during their stay and will assign a British alumna/us as a mentor.
Minimum eligibility for this award category:
Candidates need not be recent graduates, and financial need is not a factor in the selection process. The program seeks the widest possible variety of fields and career goals among applicants, including the arts and professional studies in addition to traditional academic disciplines. Preference will be given to those who do not have extensive experience in the UK.
In making these awards the Commission is looking not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to work for the betterment of the home and host countries both during and after studies.
The online application is facilitated by IIE and is used by Fulbright Commissions worldwide. Each Commission sets its own policies and procedures with country-specific information for making an application for a Fulbright Award in their country. You will be able to log in and out of your application account and will not be required to complete the application in one sitting.
It is imperative that you read the Terms and Conditions on this website before submitting your application. Applicants should review all available US Award categories and the FAQs before submitting an application. Applicants are also encouraged to register to the Fulbright Commission’s website to receive updates from the Commission.
