The American Studies Summer Institute is a unique 4-week programme, which has been devised by the US Embassy in London in collaboration with New York University. Its aim is to enrich knowledge of the United States among the next generation of American Studies professionals in the UK, in particular those who do not have extensive experience of the US at first-hand.
This year's programme will take place from 27 June - 24 July 2010.
The US Embassy in London will cover all participant costs. This includes round-trip airfare from the UK to the US (on a US airline), tuition and fees at the host university, accommodation and meals, a small daily allowance, health and accident insurance, a small book allowance and visa processing. No dependents are permitted to accompany participants.
Upon successful completion of the programme each participant will be awarded a "Certificate of American Studies" from the New York University Multinational Institute of American Studies (MIAS).
The US-UK Fulbright Commision will assist with all visa applications.
Special Programmes do not preclude participants from applying for a Fulbright Award upon returning to the UK.

This programme is intended for final year PhD candidates, recent recipients of their doctorate or those who have recently entered teaching at the university level in the field of American Studies. This can include American literature, history, politics, culture etc.
All applications are due Thursday 1 April 2010 by 5pm
Each candidate will be required to submit:

Important note: The reference letters must be posted by the referees in a signed and sealed envelope. We will not accept emailed reference letters.

We will not accept excess charges for items of mail which have been underpaid -- they will be returned unopened.
If you would like confirmation that your application has been received by the Fulbright Commission, you must send your application via Recorded Delivery. Commission staff will not confirm receipt of applications by email or phone.
Applications will be short-listed and successful applicants will be invited to interview Friday 23 April 2010. Interviews will only be held on this day and may not be rescheduled. All interviews must be in-person, without exception; the Fulbright Commission will not conduct telephone interviews for this award category.
If you are making an application, please save this date as an invitation to interview may come within a few days of the interview date.
