UK Awards - Timeline FAQs

Q: When should I apply for a Fulbright award?
A: Start planning well in advance. Two years ahead is not too early. For courses beginning in September 2012, you should start planning by late 2010, and be ready to apply in spring 2011

Q: I am currently applying for an Masters degree to begin studying Fall 2011. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline for the Fulbright Postgraduate Awards 2011-12, but was wondering if I could apply for funding to cover my second year of study?
A: No. The US-UK Fulbright Awards are only available to support UK citizens in their first year of postgraduate study in the United States and cannot be used to support the second or third year of study. If you wish to apply for a Fulbright Award for the 2012/13 academic year then you will need to formally defer your studies by one year.

Q: The postgraduate course I want to do starts in January 2013, not September 2012, should I still apply by May 2011?
A: Yes.  For all of our Postgraduate Student Scholar award categories except the British Friends of Harvard Business School MBA Awards, you will need to apply by May in the preceding academic year.

Q: I will not get my degree until the summer months after the application deadline. Can I still apply?
A: Yes, you can apply, but if you are offered an award it will be on condition that you get at least a 2.1 or equivalent.

Q: I will not hear about my university applications until late March. Does that mean I cannot apply for a Fulbright scholarship?
A: No, it does not. Most candidates do not have a firm offer of a place when we conduct the interviews. If you are interviewed and are successful, you will be offered an award on condition that you get a place at an accredited university in the US.  The Fulbright Award process is separate to the university admissions process.
