Information for Long-Term Teaching Opportunities
Please be aware that the US Educational Advisory Service (EAS) is not a careers advisory service and cannot advise on potential long-term US jobs. If you do not have the right to work in America (i.e. US citizenship or a green card), you will need a work visa. Your US employer usually has to prove to the US Immigration and Naturalisation Service that you have unique skills and qualifications that could not be found in a US employee before such a visa. Please read our handout for information on the school system. As each of the 50 state departments of education have different requirements to teach at state-funded schools, you will need to contact the relevant departments to find out their specific requirements. Some departments do accept the UK PGCE, so explain your full educational and professional qualifications to the departments. If you wish to teach in a private school, contact them directly to determine hiring policies and job qualifications. A comprehensive list of privately funded schools may be obtained from www.petersons.com. In addition, our library contains reference directories that list both private and state funded schools.

US EDUCATIONAL ADVISORY SERVICE RESOURCES
EAS is funded by the US Department of State to provide free information and advice about US education. The EAS houses a reference library including prospectuses, directories and test preparation materials. We are open Monday 1.30pm to 7.00pm or Tuesday-Friday 1.30pm to 5.00pm. Online and paper resources include School Education in the US, the State Departments of Education list, Teaching Education in the US and several award directories in our reference library, which may contain awards for exchanges or short-term observational work or research.
