Work
Exchange Programmes in the US
WHAT IS A WORK EXCHANGE PROGRAMME?
A
number of programmes between the US and the UK encourage
international understanding through practical work experience
(called "internships" in the US) for up to a maximum of
18 months. The programmes are known as work exchange programmes,
and vary widely in nature. Some programmes allow participants
to do any job available, others are restricted to specific
fields. Check to see which programme best suits your situation
and needs.
Work
exchange programmes can only be administered by organisations
authorised to issue the US Government form DS 2019. This
allows work exchange programme participants to apply for
a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa at a US Embassy, letting participants
work legally in the US for a certain period.
Plan
your participation in a work exchange programme as early
as possible. Some programmes require that you obtain an
offer of employment in the US before you apply to them.
Programmes may have application deadlines or require you
to apply a certain number of months before you intend to
leave for the US. Check as to how long the whole process
will take. Allow time for the visa application, and if possible
do not purchase a flight before you know your visa application
has been successful.
Temporary
Work Visas
The
J-1 visa is often the most straightforward and cost effective
route to obtaining permission to work in the US for a short
period of time. Other temporary work visas include the H-1B,
H-2B and H-3 visa categories, each of which has very specific
eligibility requirements. For more information on temporary
work visa categories please consult the US
Embassy website. EAS cannot answer visa enquiries.

100 sponsor companies in New York, These range from Fortune
500-sized companies [ UBS, Citibank, AT&T, American
Express, British Airways, Merrill Lynch ] through nonprofit/non
commercial entities [ British American Chamber of Commerce,
Columbia University Hospital ] right down to small companies
including sole proprietorships. On top of that, the Programme
provides structured educational training that places the
interns' experience in context, which includes modules in
Managing Information and Managing the Market. These components
are awarded by the University of Cambridge in association
with Mountbatten Programmes. Help and guidance are always
available from permanent professional staff in New York.

Additional Programme Description: The
Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars
is an independent, non-profit educational institution founded
in 1975, dedicated to provide practical training for students
to become more competitive through internship placements
and academic training. Each year, we receive more than 1,500
participants throughout the U.S.A and abroad. Currently
more than 35,000 students and young professionals have gone
through our programs. The Washington Center receives more
than 300 international participants per year. They are either
recent graduates that would like to have a work experience
or undergraduate students (we have agreements with over
850 colleges and universities in the U.S.A and abroad that
allow students to receive academic credit for their program
at TWC).
During
our programs, participants complete internships in different
organization and attend academic sessions in their area
of interest. This experience allows them to learn about
a broad range of social, economic and political issues directly
from world leaders and industry experts. The programs not
only give an unparalleled learning experience in the areas
of commerce, business, trade, and public policy but also
provide participants with the opportunity to gain invaluable
knowledge and the skills to become young leaders. Through
this experience, participants develop professional skills
and apply academic learning to the work world, thereby clarifying
personal goals, investigating career opportunities, and
preparing for life after college. Our program components
are: 1) the program related to a field of study, 2) full
time internships from Tuesday to Friday and 3) special activities.
Housing is available in shared 2 bedroom furnished apartments
for students of the same gender.
