If you were to ask me to describe my experience in
the US after 4 years in one word, I would have to
reply, 'Priceless.' I have experienced, discovered,
learnt, and enjoyed an array of many new things. This
includes an education, a new culture, new friendships,
and of course myself. I am glad to say I do not live
in regret and question, 'What if.....' but instead
I look back on the great opportunity I took.
Having not been to America prior to my time at college
the initial step was an enormous one. I was not only
leaving my family and friends, but also my entire
way of life. I was going to finally be independent,
have to adjust and utilize skills that I only ever
spoke of and never actually used. From this I was
too become a better person.
I was fortunate enough, as an athlete to receive
a scholarship through my ability to play soccer. Going
to college anywhere is an expense and any financial
assistance you receive is a bonus, especially when
attending Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida a
very exclusive private school.
It consists of approx. 1, 500 students with a large
percentage coming from very fortunate backgrounds.
Before leaving I was given the comparison that Rollins
was equivalent to 'Beverly Hills 90210.' It was referred
to as the 'Country Club of America.' In fact, I have
a T-shirt that makes that exact claim.
Now you have allowed your parents to read this passage
I am sure they are seeking elsewhere for a place that
provides a real education, but I assure you this is
quite the contrary. Being a small school there was
more personal attention between student and teacher.
The school set academic standards and those students
who wish to be successful have to maintain that required
level. I was highly impressed with the standard of
teaching and I felt that I learnt a lot more than
my final grades reflect. I actually did pretty well.
I personally felt the comforting atmosphere of where
I was located, along with peers and teachers made
learning a lot easier. I am very fond of Americans
and their way of life. I find them to be very hospitable
and being English they were significantly interested
in my unique culture/background. The American people
are very welcoming and extremely kind. I had the opportunity
to visit new places, meet new people and join their
celebrations. For example, I experienced the beauty
of Charleston, South Carolina, felt the atmosphere
of New York City, and enjoyed the peace of upstate
New York due to friends inviting me home for vacations.
I have made friends in all states throughout the US
and this exposure has led me to consider a life in
the USA.
Another string to my bow was the athletic side of
my experience. I was fortunate enough to enjoy both
the student and the athletic life at college. Playing
soccer allowed my name to not only circulate throughout
the college, but also throughout the community. Parents
and young children admired and appreciated what I
did on the field. I was able to return that appreciation
by coaching many young players within the area to
play soccer. It was some of the most satisfying work
that I have done. It gave me the opportunity to make
a number of new friends within the local community.
After 4 years I look back and wish I could do it
all again. I hope that my small insight to what I
experienced is of assistance to those of you seeking
the same opportunity. Remember taking a new and exciting
can not only offer you an education, but also a chance
to develop as a person, to discover who you really
are and what you can be capable of achieving if given
the chance. The world is a big place and there is
a lot to learn. America is the perfect place to start.
Good Luck!
