Application Process
Most international students enter the US on a non-immigrant
student visa. Once you accept an offer from a US university,
the university will require proof of funds for the
first year before sending you either an I-20 or an
IAP-66 government document. You can then apply for
your visa - either an F-1 or a J-1, respectively.
All applicants for a student or exchange visitor visa
are required to complete the visa application form
DS-156, formally known as the OF-156. If a member
of your family travels with you, a separate DS-156
form must be filled out for each family member. The
DS-156 may be downloaded from the US Embassy's website
at www.usembassy.org.uk.
The application fee must be paid into a bank on a
paying-in-slip obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed
A-4 sized envelope with 27p postage to: United States
