UK Outstanding European Students 2007

Shanelle Melvina Ruby Blair
Shanelle is a passionate student that comes from Aylesbury, England, and is completing her last year at Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School. Her great interest in sport is demonstrated through her participation as a County Standard athlete and netball player. She has been awarded a Sports Leader Award, and has given back to her community by acting as Sport Director for a village school and by offering sporting opportunities to disabled students. Following the programme in the United States, she intends to study Business and Management and hopes to go on to manage several businesses and eventually run her own business one day.

Zali Donaeva
Zali is a hardworking individual and has achieved remarkable academic results as well as immersed herself fully in social and cultural activities. Besides being an exceptional student, Zali has devoted much of her free time to charity work and to being a leader. She is a peer mentor, School Prefect, and has been elected as Form Representative at her College. After completing her A-Levels she intends to obtain a degree in Financial Economics, and later hopes to gain experience in a fast-moving environment such as London or New York.

Christopher Keating
Christopher is a second year student at the Sir John Cass Business School at City University in London. He has been described by his tutor as honest, enthusiastic, and pro-active. His leadership skills have been strengthened through his participation as a Student Ambassador for his university, as Managing Director of a young enterprise company known as ‘PULSE’, and through his work with SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise). Chris has responded to community issues through his commendable environmental practices, and by his involvement in creating a non-alcoholic ‘pub’. In the future he hopes to attain a 1st in Business Studies and in his words find ‘an enjoyable but rewarding job’.

Jemma Depala
Jemma is a compassionate and ambitious individual who is deeply involved with her community. Through her charity work for Global Volunteers Network, Millennium Volunteers, Barnet Association for the Blind, and the North London Hospice, she has been awarded the Edna James Cup for Community Service and grants from The Prince’s Trust and Barnet Council. Jemma will be in Uganda early this summer volunteering with Hope for the Future. Through this project, which has taken her over two years to fundraise, she will be teaching English at a school and working to help destitute children, widows, orphans, and elderly suffering from HIV and AIDS. In the future she hopes to gain a 1st in History at Royal Holloway University of London, and demonstrate her leadership by setting up a charity.

Nathan Desmond Joseph Oliver
Nathan is a well-rounded medical student from Queen’s University of Belfast in Northern Ireland. With his interest in sport, he has been a part of the Queen’s Rowing Team, Queen’s Water Polo Team, the Mountaineering Society, and has been named Swimmer of the Year. Furthermore, he has volunteered to coach younger members of the swimming club and has achieved a coaching award for this work. His dedication to help others is evident through his provision of aid to children in Romania and his participation in the Down Syndrome Association’s ‘SHOUT’ project. After completing his degree in Medicine, he hopes to work for the WHO or the UN within the area of Public Health in order to help others in less fortunate countries.
