University of Ulster Fellowship in Policy Studies
Award Category: Lecturing/Research
Grant Activity: This award provides for an
US academic to lecture and conduct research for a
period of three months at the University's new School
of Policy Studies. The Fellow will teach one or
more of the following subjects (undergraduate, graduate
and doctorate level): Comparative Public Administration,
Public Management, Social Policy. Evidence of teaching
experience should be included in the application.
Preference will be given to applications which include
proposals for outreach or community involvement.
The School has access to a limited research strategy
budget and some financial support may be available
to help with the generation of research material and/or
its dissemination. In terms of the latter, the scholar
would be expected to give a seminar on their research
activity during their tenure at the university.
Opportunities may also arise, should the scholar be
interested, to engage in continual professional development
work with senior public sector officials on cross-border
(Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland) short courses.
These will explore public administration and management
issues within the two jurisdictions and, more generally,
in the context of the European Union. INCORE –
the Initiative on Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity
is also located within the School. INCORE is a joint
initiative of the United Nations University and the
University of Ulster. It addresses the management
and resolution of ethno-political conflicts through
a combination of research, policy and internet work
and has an international reputation in this area.
It attracts visiting scholars from around the world.
Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate
evidence of a well-developed network within US universities,
which could be used to extend links/exchanges with
the University of Ulster, and a track record of international
research within one or more of the following teaching
areas: comparative public administration, public management,
and social policy.
Stipend: $25,000 for 3 months. This
money is for travel and general expenses incurred
during the recipient's time in the UK. Candidates
should arrange to receive sabbatical pay while away
to meet any additional expenses.

Facilities/Services: The visiting
scholar will be afforded the full facilities of permanent
faculty staff to support their ongoing research. This
will include office accommodation, access to a computer,
library resources, and other sports and social facilities.
Restrictions: Those who hold dual US/UK citizenship
are ineligible. Once the award period is confirmed,
no extensions or alterations to it may be made. Those
who have recently spent a considerable time in the
UK will take lower priority.
Dependants: The Commission cannot
offer maintenance for dependants. Candidates must
ensure they have sufficient funds to support accompanying
family members during their stay.
Accommodation: The Commission is unable to provide
accommodation. Successful candidates are advised to
contact the University of Ulster for local housing
assistance.
