Fulbright
Criminal Justice and Police Research Fellowships
Number
of Awards: 2
Awards
Category: Research
Grant
Activity: Active domestic police officers
and police administrators can apply to pursue extended
training and professional development in the United
Kingdom for a minimum of 3 months, in order to research
problems shared by US and UK police forces. While
there, they can lecture, conduct research or do a
combination of both in their field of expertise. The
specifics of this arrangement should be arranged directly
with the institute of affiliation.
Qualifications: Candidates with a bachelor's
degree in criminal justice, police studies or a related
discipline within the social sciences are preferred
but those without a degree but who have shown excellence
in other areas, will be considered. Applicants must
be currently employed by a police force, must be recommended
by supervisory staff within the department and hold
a position of responsibility at the level of sworn
sergeant or above. Grantees must have full or partial
financial support from their home department. Applicants
do not need to confirm an affiliation prior to submitting
an application, but it is advantageous to include
a letter from an UK university offering an affiliation.
Stipend: These awards provide £7,500
for 3 months. This money is for travel and general
expenses incurred during the recipient's time in the
UK. Candidates usually arrange to receive sabbatical
costs while away, to meet any additional expenses.
Restrictions: Those who hold dual US/UK citizenship
are ineligible. Once the award period is confirmed,
no extensions or alterations to it may be made. Those
who have recently spent a considerable time in the
UK will take lower priority.
Dependants: The Commission cannot offer maintenance
for dependants. Candidates must ensure they have sufficient
funds to support accompanying family members during
their stay.
Affiliations: Applicants are responsible
for finding their own affiliation with an UK institution.
This does not need to be established at the time of
application, but candidates who can demonstrate that
they are actively pursuing an affiliation will be
viewed more favorably.
University programs are usually identified as Police
Science, Law Enforcement, Criminology, Criminal Justice

the National Police Library in Bramshill, Hampshire
a useful starting point. It is run by the National
Police Improvement Agency (NPIA), the national
police training organisation. The College is always
happy to help assist in finding a suitable affiliation
within academia and police departments and can sometimes
act as the affiliation itself.
