Being a Host Institution
There are two awards programmes designed to help academic institutions bring US academics or professionals to their university. Academic institutions do not have to be universities; in some cases, museums, libraries, and archival facilities may be accepted, at the discretion of The Commission. There are no limits on the number of Fulbright grantees which an institution can have in a given year.

Please note that The Commission does not set aside money for supporting educational institutions outside of that designated within these awards. Any special requests for help from The Commission will be considered on a case by case basis. Queries should be directed to The Awards Programme, Fulbright House, 62 Doughty Street, London, WC1N 2JZ, UK. Tel: 020 7404 6880. Email: programmes@fulbright.co.uk

Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Awards
Deadline: Friday 1 August 2008

Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Awards enable post-doctoral academics or professionals to lecture, conduct research, or do a combination of the two for a period of four to ten months.
Higher Educational Institutions in the UK may arrange for a Distinguished Scholar applicant to:

• Teach graduate and undergraduate courses, conduct seminars or workshops, consult on course design and curriculum development
• Conduct research in an area of expertise

In either case, the specifics of this arrangement should be worked out directly between the scholar and the host institution. The Commission does prefer proposals which are not limited to research but will involve some exchange of ideas with colleagues or students (usually through lecturing) and some outreach to other institutions locally. However, exceptional research-only proposals are always welcome.

Topics of interest include those that address problems common to both the US and UK, topics where collaboration can lead to progress of international significance and projects which will establish or develop relations between universities. There must be strong reasons for wishing to bring the person to the UK to carry out the project and a clear idea of what will be accomplished during the grant period.

The Award
These awards provide £15,000 for 10 months and are prorated for shorter periods, the shortest grant allowed being for 4 months. This money is for travel and general expenses incurred during the recipient's time in the UK. Candidates usually arrange to receive sabbatical pay while in the UK to meet any additional expenses. Host Institutions are expected to provide office facilities and help with finding accommodation.

The Commission cannot offer maintenance for dependants. Host Institutions may wish to provide extra funding to support accompanying family members during their stay but this is optional. The Commission is also unable to provide accommodation. General information and guidelines only is offered to scholars by The Commission.

Scholars are invited to attend a 2-day orientation programme in London in September and a 4-day programme in January in London and one other location (Liverpool in 2007).

Application
Applications from US candidates must be made through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) in Washington DC and not directly to the Fulbright Commission. It is not necessary for the host institution to contact the Fulbright Commission themselves. Please see the CIES website for deadlines.

Applicants must include a letter of invitation from the host institution with their application. A general outline of the sort of work the institution plans to carry out with the applicant and of any assistance the institution will offer is desirable, as are plans for any outreach work.

Start date: Between September 2009 and April 2010.

Fulbright Senior Specialists Fellowships
Deadline: None

The Fulbright Senior Specialists Fellowships are designed so that educational institutions can request US academic faculty and/or for short periods of two to six weeks, with serial visits possible.

The Fulbright Senior Specialist Programme differs from the traditional Fulbright Distinguished Scholar competition in that the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) has compiled a roster of specialists in a variety of fields through an open application process. Applicants apply to be on this roster and, if recommended by a specialist peer review committee and approved by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, they are listed on the roster for Fulbright Senior Specialist awards.

Educational institutions can at any time request Fulbright Senior Specialists through The Commission and we then review the request. If approved, The Commission then finds a candidate from the roster which matches the specific needs of the university. The institution can work with The Commission to find the person best suited to the post and extensive information on all candidates is available before selection. Fulbright Senior Specialist candidates will then be contacted to ascertain their availability and the proposal must be approved by the US State Department. This entire process can take between two and four months.

Alternatively, the institution can approach The Commission with an academic or professional already identified and request that specific person to visit their university. If the person is not on the roster in the US, expect the entire process to take a minimum of 3 months. If the person is on the roster already, the process will take a minimum of 2 months.

Grantee activity may include (but is not limited to):

• Conducting needs assessments, surveys, institutional or    programmatic research
• Taking part in specialised academic programmes and conferences    in conjunction with other scheduled activities
• Consulting with administrators and instructors of post-secondary    institutions on faculty development
• Presenting lectures at graduate and undergraduate levels

Note: Research is not funded via the Fulbright Senior Specialists Programme.

This is a required contribution on your part under the award scheme. The Commission does not provide any additional funds beyond the $200 per day and return flight.

Academics and professionals on the roster must meet all of these minimum eligibility requirements:

• Be a US citizen at the time of application.
• For academics, a PhD or equivalent professional/terminal degree at the time of application plus a minimum of five years of post-doctoral teaching or professional experience in the field in which they specialise.
• For professionals and artists outside an educational environment, recognised professional standing and substantial professional accomplishments plus a minimum of five years of professional experience in the field in which they
• Disclosure of prior conviction or current indictment for commission of a felony. Prior conviction or current indictment usually results in disqualification.

These awards are for periods of 2 to 6 weeks. This time can be spread out over a 12 month period if multiple visits are planned or the grant can be completed in one fixed period. Once the grant is authorised, changes to the dates are not permitted except in exceptional circumstances and are never backdated.
