Distinguished
Scholars
Number
of Awards:
2 - 4 each year
Award Category: Lecturing, Lecturing/Research,
Research
Grant Activity: If lecturing, teach
graduate and undergraduate courses, conduct seminars
or workshops, consult on course design and curriculum
development or, if research, then conduct research
in area of expertise. The specifics of this arrangement
should be worked out directly with the institute of
affiliation.
Qualifications: Applicants are expected
to be leaders or potential leaders in their field.
Awards are issued regardless of age, race, gender,
financial situation or field of expertise. Topics
of interest include those that address problems common
to both the US and UK, topics where collaboration
can lead to progress of international significance
and projects which will establish or develop relations
between universities. Candidates should have strong
reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project
in the UK and a clear idea of what they wish to accomplish
during their time as a Fulbright scholar, not only
academically but also in terms of reaching out to
the wider community and understanding their host country
and culture.
Stipend: These awards provide £15,000
for 10 months, prorated for shorter periods, the shortest
grant being for four months. This money is for travel
and general expenses incurred during the recipient's
time in the UK.
Candidates usually arrange to receive sabbatical pay
while away to meet any additional expenses.
Restrictions: Once the award period
is set, no extensions or alterations to it may be
made.
Dependants: The Commission cannot
offer maintenance for dependants. Candidates must
ensure they have sufficient funds to support accompanying
family members during their stay.
Affiliations: Applicants are responsible
for arranging their own affiliation with an UK institution
and must include a letter of invitation from that
institution with their application. The institution
does not have to be an educational faculty; in some
cases museums, libraries and archival facilities may
be accepted at the discretion of The Commission.
Accommodation: The Commission is
unable to provide accommodation. Candidates should
contact their chosen university's accommodation or
international offices for housing assistance once
they have been accepted. General information and guidelines
will be offered to all chosen grantees.
Length of Grant: 4to 10 months
Start Date: Between 1st September
2008 and 30th April 2009.
