Applications
The US-UK Fulbright Commission provides approximately 10
awards to US citizens to fund the first year of a master's
or doctorate degree or to pursue research at an educational
institution within the UK. The awards cover tuition fees,
a maintenance stipend and accident and sickness insurance
for one academic year, usually beginning in mid-late September
(typically 9 months).
Additional Benefits
All grantees are required to attend a 2-day cultural orientation
program on arrival in September and a 4-day Forum in January,
both of which provide lectures, panel discussions, and social
events designed to enable grantees to better understand
the modern UK and its relationship with the rest of the
world.
Grantees are also invited to a number of informal events
throughout the year which offer the opportunity to meet
professional colleagues, Fulbright alumni and representatives
from government, industry and other institutions.
All grantees receive free membership of the British Fulbright
Scholars Association, the association for Fulbright alumni
in the UK (www.bfsa.org),
the Royal Society of Arts (www.theRSA.org)
and the English-Speaking Union (www.esu.org)
which entitles them to participate in events throughout
the year and to use their facilities.
With the collaboration of BFSA, grantees are assigned a
mentor in the UK, either a Fulbright alumnus or one of the
Fulbright Board of Commissioners. Mentors serve as an additional
point of social contact and provide opportunities to experience
the UK outside the academic environment. The relationship
between grantee and mentor is an informal one and is not
regulated by the Commission.
Affiliations
The US-UK Fulbright Commission does not place applicants,
nor apply to universities on behalf of applicants. Applicants
are responsible for their own affiliations and may apply
to more than one university. Proof of acceptance is not
required before or during the application process but awards
are made conditional upon acceptance to the chosen university
before arrival in the UK. Correspondence relating to the
feasibility of the project proposal may be included with
the application form.
Applicants for one of the co-sponsored
awards at institutions that the Commission has established
a University Partnership with, should indicate this clearly
in the “Country” box in the top left-hand corner
of the first page of the application form.
Independent Research: individuals proposing to pursue independent
research as part of a research-based masters program or
a Ph.D. should include with their application papers, letters
from their proposed UK supervisor endorsing the acceptability
and feasibility of the project.

Creative
Writing
Queen’s
University of Belfast
- School of English
"The Queen’s University of Belfast was incorporated
in 1908 as a continuation of the college founded by Sir
Robert Peel’s administration in 1845 as part of a
scheme of university education for Ireland. Since its foundation,
Queen's has adhered to the principle of strictly non-denominational
teaching. Its 1908 charter also guaranteed equality for
women - 12 years before they were admitted to Oxford and
a full decade before they were given the vote. It also made
trailblazing provision for student representation on the
Senate, the governing body of the University - a radical
move in the early days of the 20th century. Today Queen's
is a member of the Russell Group of leading United Kingdom
universities and a broadly-based research-led institution
offering a dynamic world-class portfolio of research and
educational opportunities.
The
Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry at the School of English
in Queen’s is a dynamic and vibrant focal point in
Ireland for the writing, criticism and appreciation of modern
literature. It is a recognised international centre of research
excellence in the field, and is distinguished not merely
by its critical activity, but also by its promotion of creative
writing as a living art. Central to the Centre’s ethos
is the lively exchange between poets, critics and students,
between critical and creative traditions. It works to ensure
the continuance of the rich tradition Seamus Heaney did
so much to develop in his years as a student and lecturer
at Queen’s, a tradition which emphasises poetry’s
communal presence and international profile."
