Karl O'Hanlon graduated from Queen's University, Belfast, with a degree in English. During his time at Queen's he received a number of academic prizes and served as treasurer of the English Society while overseeing the publication of an anthology of new writing. Karl studied English at Georgetown University, with a focus on the American South as an imagined community. He says that "it is propitious that academics join with politicians in a renewed effort to examine, and where necessary, challenge forcefully the myths that shape our cultural identities, in order to achieve a compassionate, informed world with long-lasting peace".
