John Parise was born in Australia and obtained his PhD there based on research that included two years at Osaka University, Japan funded by a Sumitomo Fellowship. He held positions in Chemistry at DuPont Chemical Company and Sydney University prior to becoming a joint-Professor in Geosciences and Chemistry Departments at Stony Brook University in New York. In 2008 he was awarded the State University of New York Chancellor’s Medal for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. Professor Parise’s abiding interests are in the exploratory synthesis of transformational materials that have unusual and potentially useful properties. As a Fulbright Distinguished scholar, he will collaborate with colleagues at Edinburgh University’s Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions. Together they will explore the use of the centre’s world-class facilities for high-pressure synthesis to discover and test new electronic and polymeric materials.
