Darrell obtained an undergraduate degree in veterinary science from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 1985. He returned to Belfast and has since worked in the Veterinary Epidemiology Unit of the Department. In 1990 he completed a Masters in Social Science and has recently finished a PhD on the epidemiology and management of bovine brucellosis and currently manages the Epidemiology Unit. His visit to the US was used to model the Northern Ireland brucellosis and/or tuberculosis data and to assess how the authorities there have controlled these diseases.
