
Darrell obtained an undergraduate degree in veterinary science from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 1985. That year, he joined the Department of Agriculture, Northern Ireland and worked as a State Veterinary Officer before undertaking an aid contract in Botswana. He returned to Belfast and has since worked in the Veterinary Epidemiology Unit of the Department. In 1990 he completed a Masters in Social Science and has recently finished a PhD on the epidemiology and management of bovine brucellosis and currently manages the Epidemiology Unit. His visit to the US was used to model the Northern Ireland brucellosis and/or tuberculosis data and to assess how the authorities there have controlled these diseases.
