Fulbright Scholar to convene Antarctic Treaty Summit

The 50th anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in Washington, D.C. will be on 1 December 2009.  To celebrate this international landmark and the global vision of the twelve original signatories, the Antarctic Treaty Summit: Science-Policy Interactions in International Governance will be convened from 30 November through 3 December 2009 at the Smithsonian Institution to highlight lessons learned about international governance “with the interests of science and the progress of all mankind” (www.atsummit50.aq).

Prof. Paul Berkman (pictured) was awarded a Fulbright Distinguished Scholarship at the University of Cambridge in 2007-08 for his project on the "Antarctic Treaty Summit; Science-Policy Interactions in International Governance" and he chairs the International Board for the Antarctic Treaty Summit.  In convening this international, interdisciplinary and inclusive event - Prof. Berkman also proposed and drafted legislation for the United States Congress to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty "in the interest of all mankind."  On 30 September 2009, the United States House of Representatives adopted House Concurrent Resolution 51 (Recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Antarctic Treaty) with the sponsorship of Congressman Pat Tiberi from Ohio and 33 co-sponsors, including Chair of the House Committee on Science and Technology and Chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
